This Winter Tom Holleman was asked to do a special outdoorsman course for an intensive 6 weeks period in the Belgium Ardennes (Chevron) for Compass a Mental health Organization for young adults.
The order was to help - educate young adults with specific mental and drug addictive problems, during this 6 weeks period we did a lot of outdoor sports, hiking, camping, survival bushcraft training.
The purpose was to get them into a normal life rhythm again without drugs, & show them to enjoy life through outdoor activity and sport. Toms plan is to continue Do İt Team building work and to do these 6 weeks periodic work for Compass Mental Health Organization several times a year.
Tom 's personal experience in life and his 20 + years career in Outdoor work showed of to be helpful for the young adults, Tom explains it like this; To be able to help these youngsters in a difficult period in life through outdoor sports & nature was a wonderful but also hard mentally experience. I learned a lot about the specific mental health issues like depression, self-hate, drugs addiction, suicidal thoughts, and autism. At first sight, these kids look and behave normally but inside they struggle with so many problems, I hath to learn how to approach these problems and how to motivate them to enjoy life as much as I do, thinking that through my leadership and no-nonsense approach to life I was able to help them a little step ahead !
All Together we hath a great time with the youngsters and my 2 colleagues (mental health specialist ) and will not hesitate to do a new program for them!
